Series background & context

Men of Valor is one of Irene Hannon's most straightforward romantic suspense trilogies. Each book pairs a capable heroine with a battle-tested man whose military experience did not end when he came home. The men in this series are former operators and soldiers, but the stories are not military fiction. They are about what happens when danger intrudes on ordinary lives and old instincts switch back on.

The brothers give the series its spine.

In Buried Secrets, a small-town police chief and an ex-Navy SEAL investigate human bones discovered on a construction site. Thin Ice turns on a message from a supposedly dead woman and the reopened mystery around her grave. Tangled Webs follows a former Army Ranger drawn into a threatening puzzle around a woman staying at a lakeside cabin. Different setups, same underlying energy: quiet lives abruptly disrupted, with the past refusing to stay buried.

What works so well here is the contrast between the heroes' training and the settings Hannon places them in. These are not nonstop battlefield stories. They unfold in towns, cabins, homes, and neighborhoods where people are trying to rest, recover, or start over. That makes the danger feel more invasive, and it gives the romance a different shape. The men are protective, yes, but they are also weary, watchful, and trying to imagine a life larger than survival.

Hannon keeps the mystery element strong in all three books. Skeletons, suspicious fires, fabricated deaths, menacing pranks, she likes a clean hook, then layers in enough false starts and personal tension to keep things moving. The women are never passive passengers through that process. They bring their own professional skills, their own grief, and their own stubbornness.

Read Buried Secrets, Thin Ice, and Tangled Webs in order. You will get the best payoff from the family connections and the recurring sense that even people trained for crisis still need ordinary hope, ordinary love, and a safe place to land.
