Author bio

Melissa Yi is the crime-writing name of emergency physician Melissa Yuan-Innes, and that double life tells you a lot about her books. She writes with the speed, pressure, and dark humor of someone who has seen real emergencies up close, then gone home and turned the mess into story.

She was a library kid first. As a child, she read so fiercely that her parents would drop her off at the library while her brother went to tae kwon do. When her family moved from Canada to Frankfurt at age ten, the sudden shortage of English books pushed her toward writing her own stories. Later, the family moved back to Canada, to the outskirts of Ottawa before she started grade 8, and she kept reading, performing, and writing through the awkward years of school.

She came to writing as a reader first.

Medicine arrived because she wanted to save lives, and because she is curious about people. She studied emergency medicine at McGill in Montreal, and her years of training gave her a close look at the strain, absurdity, and occasional heartbreak of hospital life. She has spoken plainly about how rough some of that training could be, from overcrowded waiting rooms to a family medicine clinic with no running water. Out of that world came Dr. Hope Sze, the resident doctor who can treat a crashing patient and still find herself hunting a killer before the shift is over.

That character anchors Yi's best-known fiction. The Hope Sze books, including Code Blues, Notorious D.O.C., Terminally Ill, Stockholm Syndrome, Human Remains, and White Lightning, blend medical detail with murder, travel, family stress, and a touch of mischief. Readers tend to come for the hospital suspense and stay for Hope herself, who is smart, funny, stubborn, and never as cool on the inside as she looks from the outside. Terminally Ill even made the jump to the stage, which feels fitting for a writer who clearly enjoys working in more than one form.

Yi does not stay in one lane for long.

Outside the Hope books, she has written lighter travel mysteries such as The Italian School for Assassins and The Goa Yoga School of Slayers, the YA mystery High School Hit List: Animal Whisperer, the Vegas-set The Red Rock Killer, the noir story Indian Time, the werewolf thriller Wolf Ice, and romance too. Under the name Melissa Yuan-Innes, she also writes fantasy, science fiction, poetry, memoir, and very funny medical nonfiction. Her stage piece based on The Most Unfeeling Doctor in the World won Best of Fest at the Ottawa Fringe, which gives you another clue about her style: even when the material gets heavy, she likes wit, movement, and human detail.

A few things show up again and again in her work. Systems under stress. Women trying to keep their footing. Families that are loving but messy. Travel that opens doors and trouble at the same time. She has worked in Ontario and Quebec, and as far north as Ivujivik, Quebec, and now practices in Eastern Ontario. She is married to her high school sweetheart, has two children, loves yoga, travel, reading, Fringe festivals, and food, and still seems happiest when medicine and imagination are both making noise at once.
