Series background & context

Hope's Seven Deadly Sins takes a familiar Melissa Yi heroine and tilts her world in a stranger direction. Dr. Hope Sze is still a doctor. She is still practical, funny, overworked, and way too likely to cross paths with murder. But this branch of her story is built around a bigger idea: each book circles one of the seven deadly sins and lets that theme shape the danger.

That sounds high concept, but the books stay grounded in character and place. The first entry, The Shapes of Wrath, drops Hope into a surgery rotation where anger is everywhere. It is in the bullying surgeon who terrorizes an operating room. It is in the hierarchy that lets bad behavior slide. It is in the quiet resentment of people who have been cornered too long. And then, because this is a Hope Sze book, there is a death, a mystery, and a hospital that starts to feel haunted in more ways than one.

Wrath is not treated like a school lesson. It is a pressure source. Yi uses the sin as a way to ask who gets to rage openly, who has to swallow it, and what happens when that pressure finally blows. In The Shapes of Wrath, the medical setting keeps everything immediate. Lives are on the line before anyone even begins sleuthing. The operating room is already a tense place, and adding fear, harassment, and a possible ghost only sharpens it.

This is where the series starts to differ from the main Hope books.

The Seven Deadly Sins line allows more paranormal elements to leak into Hope's life. In this corner of Yi's fiction, the weird is not just a metaphor anymore. Strange sightings, uncanny presences, and other not-quite-rational intrusions sit beside scalpels, charts, and clinical decisions. That mix gives the books a different flavor from the straight medical mysteries. They are still crime stories, but they are willing to stare at the uncanny instead of brushing it away.

Even so, Hope remains the anchor. She is not suddenly transformed into a fantasy heroine. She asks questions, doubts herself, notices concrete details, and keeps trying to protect people. That skepticism matters because it stops the supernatural thread from floating off into vagueness. The books stay tense because Hope still has to move through a real workplace with real consequences, even when the atmosphere turns eerie.

If the main Hope books are medical mysteries with thriller muscle, this series turns the dial toward the uncanny.

Start with The Shapes of Wrath. It introduces the idea cleanly and shows what this subseries does best: take a deadly sin, drop it into a pressured medical world, and let Hope Sze face both human cruelty and something harder to explain.
