Author bio
Melissa Cutler grew up in Southern California, and one of the most telling details about her reading life comes from her teen years. She has said she spent that time on the floor of her local bookstore's romance aisle, trying to stretch a filing clerk paycheck into as many books as possible. That early habit says a lot about the writer she would become.
Romance came first.
For years, she was the kind of reader who knew exactly what she wanted from a story, smart heroines, strong chemistry, real feeling, and an ending that felt earned. In 2008, she decided to stop being only a devoted romance reader and try writing one herself. That choice became the turning point.
The jump from reader to author happened fast once it clicked. In 2012, she sold four books in five days to two New York publishers, which is a pretty memorable way to start a career. Since then, she has written both contemporary romance and romantic suspense, often moving between cowboy stories, small-town love stories, and danger-heavy plots with black ops agents and wounded veterans.
She writes people who have been through something.
In the Catcher Creek books, starting with The Trouble with Cowboys, she heads to New Mexico ranch country for stories about sisters trying to save family land, hard work, old hurts, and men who are not nearly as easy to avoid as they should be. In the One and Only Texas books, including One Hot Summer, One More Taste, and The Mistletoe Effect, she shifts to Briscoe Ranch Resort, where weddings, family tension, second chances, and Texas-sized complications keep things moving.
Her suspense side shows up in books like Tempted into Danger and Secret Agent Secretary, where federal agents, betrayals, and on-the-run survival raise the stakes. Then there is the Bomb Squad series, with Risky Business, Undefeated, and Game Changer, which mixes hockey romance with the long work of healing after war, injury, divorce, and grief. Readers who like blue-collar heroes, capable women, and a solid emotional payoff usually find plenty to like in her work.
Across all of these books, some patterns keep showing up. Cutler likes working people, family businesses, hidden vulnerabilities, and communities that feel lived in. Even when the setup is high danger, there is usually something grounded underneath it, a ranch that has to survive, a team that becomes a brotherhood, a woman rebuilding her life, or two people trying to trust each other at the worst possible time.
She has also shared a few personal details that fit the mood of her books. She has described herself as a coffee addict, cat fanatic, yoga practitioner, martini enthusiast, and ardent feminist. She has said she caught the travel bug early, and that restless streak makes sense when you look at how often her stories move between open country, resort towns, and pressure-cooker action settings.
Cutler has been described as a Southern California native, and publisher bios have placed her in San Diego with her husband, two children, and a very watchful cat. When she is not writing, she has said she enjoys flip-flop weather, family life, and planning her next trip. That mix of escape, humor, heat, and everyday mess is a big part of what makes her books such easy company.
