Melinda Mullet Books in Order

Melinda Mullet was born in Dallas to British parents and grew up between Texas and the UK. She also spent time at school in Washington, D.C., England, and Austria, so moving between places and perspectives became normal early on. That mix still shows in her fiction, which feels equally comfortable with Scottish village life, London waterways, and the tidy mechanics of a classic mystery.

She was a mystery reader long before she was a mystery writer. As a kid, she loved Nancy Drew, Scooby-Doo, and the Famous Five, then later moved on to writers like Agatha Christie and P. D. James. You can see that reading history in her books, which care a lot about motive, community, and the quiet pressure of secrets.

For a long time, though, fiction had to wait.

Mullet studied English literature and then built a career in law, eventually working in communications, media, and entertainment law in both the United States and the United Kingdom. She has said that she always had stories in her head, but professional writing took most of her energy. By the time the workday ended, there was not much room left for invented murders.

The shift came after years in those legal trenches. Once she stepped away from the profession, she finally had time to write for herself instead of for clients, and the ideas that had been sitting in the background had somewhere to go. Crime fiction turned out to be the natural fit.

The spark for her first series came from travel and whisky. Mullet's husband is a serious whisky collector, and years of following him around Scottish distillery tours gave her both setting and subject. At some point she realized that a vat of whisky would be a memorable place to find a body, and that idea became Single Malt Murder, the start of her Whisky Business books.

Those novels, including Death Distilled, Deadly Dram, and Died in the Wool, follow Abigail Logan, a photojournalist who inherits a distillery in Scotland and keeps finding trouble along with her casks. Readers who enjoy them tend to like the strong sense of place, the working details of the whisky trade, and the fact that Abi feels like a capable outsider rather than a polished detective.

Then Mullet tried a different corner of the genre.

With A Ghostwriter's Guide to Murder, she moved to London's Regent's Canal and introduced Maeve Gardner, a ghostwriter living on a houseboat who ends up tangled in real murder. The premise lets Mullet have fun with publishing life, amateur sleuthing, and the odd fact that someone can be very good at plotting crimes on paper and still feel unprepared when one lands on her doorstep.

Children's literacy has stayed at the center of her life outside fiction. Mullet has long supported literacy causes and worked with domestic and international groups that promote functional literacy for children. These days she lives just outside Washington, D.C., with her family, and when she is not there she is often in the UK. She has described herself as a travel junkie, which feels believable once you see how often movement, border-crossing, and a strong sense of place shape her fiction.
