Author bio

Becky Clark writes cozy mysteries with jokes, oddball situations, and ordinary people who would really rather not be dealing with a murder. Her books include the Mystery Writer's Mysteries, the Crossword Puzzle Mysteries, the Dunne Diehl novels written with Ted Hardwick, and the Sugar Mill Marketplace Mysteries. She has also written books about finishing a novel, encouraging reading, and making low-calorie meals without making life harder.

She is the seventh of eight children, and she has said that growing up in a large, funny family helped set the tone for her sense of humor. It also seems to have given her a lasting interest in the comic possibilities of everyday life, from family chaos to pets with strong opinions.

Clark was writing for young readers by the late 1990s. She later made an unexpected move into electronic nonfiction, producing the Lazy Low Cal Lifestyle cookbooks and How To Lose Weight and Get Healthy Even If You're Lazy. Her practical writing guide, Eight Weeks to a Complete Novel, grew from the systems she uses to plan, draft, revise, and finish fiction.

Then came adult mysteries.

Her first two cozy novels, Banana Bamboozle and Marshmallow Mayhem, were written with her longtime friend Ted Hardwick. They center on Cassidy Dunne, a fifty-something woman with a candy habit, a complicated ex-husband, and a gift for finding trouble. Cassidy's longtime college friend Dan Diehl is usually nearby, whether he wants to be or not.

Clark's solo mystery work began with Fiction Can Be Murder. Its heroine, Charlemagne "Charlee" Russo, is a midlist mystery writer who only wants to work on her books. Instead, a murder mirrors the plot of her unpublished manuscript, and Charlee becomes a suspect. The later books, including Foul Play on Words, Metaphor for Murder, and Police Navidad, keep the focus on the funny, stressful business of writers, conferences, performances, deadlines, and amateur sleuthing.

The Crossword Puzzle Mysteries take a more personal starting point. In Puzzling Ink, Quinn Carr has returned to her Colorado hometown after an OCD diagnosis and a difficult period of depression. She makes puzzles for the local paper, waits tables at a diner, and hopes to build a steadier life. Naturally, murders keep getting in the way. Punning with Scissors and Fatal Solutions combine clue-solving with Quinn's family history, her workplace regulars, and a police chief who would often prefer that crime stay out of sight.

Her mysteries make room for serious problems, but they don't linger in gloom.

Clark's more recent Sugar Mill Marketplace books move to Sugar Springs, Colorado, where Charlee's mother, Dena Russo, opens a used bookstore in a renovated sugar mill full of small businesses. Booked at the Sugar Mill Marketplace, Plotted at the Sugar Mill Marketplace, and Bound at the Sugar Mill Marketplace follow Dena and the other shopkeepers through fresh starts, local feuds, and crimes that threaten the whole community.

Clark lives in Colorado with her husband in an empty nest shaped by the memories of raising three children. Away from the keyboard, she enjoys Broadway shows, crime fiction, stand-up comedy, and making purses from rescued hardcover books. She also needs quiet to write, though she has admitted that occasional dance breaks and hula hooping are part of the routine.
