Series background & context
The Melinda Foster series, also known as the Growing Season novels, follows one woman's move from a stalled city life to a rural Iowa town that slowly becomes home. It starts with Growing Season, when Melinda is approaching forty, has lost her copywriting job in the Twin Cities, and receives a call that brings her back to Iowa. A faded farmhouse for rent, a needy collection of animals, and work at her family's hardware store give her more responsibility than she expected.
The town is Prosper, proudly called “The Great Little Town That Didn't.” It is small enough that the hardware store's coffee group knows everybody's business, but that closeness is also what makes the place matter. Melinda has to learn farm work, care for sheep and chickens, tend a garden, and find her footing among relatives, old acquaintances, and new friends.
Nothing changes all at once.
The books move through the calendar, letting each season bring its own work and complications. Harvest Season asks whether Melinda will choose the security of her former city life or take a chance on Prosper. The Peaceful Season brings Christmas plans and an unexpected visitor. Waiting Season tests her hopes for the farm during a difficult Iowa winter.
As the series continues through Songbird Season, The Bright Season, Turning Season, The Blessed Season, Daffodil Season, and Firefly Season, Melinda's life grows beyond the question of whether she will stay. Farm repairs, town festivals, family history, local business pressures, friendships, and romance all create the ongoing tension. Prosper's future is often tied to the personal choices its residents make.
The animals and the setting are part of the story, not just scenery. Lambing season, kitchen projects, muddy chores, rescue cats, changing gardens, and storms give the novels their steady rhythm. The tone is gentle and hopeful, but Melinda still faces money worries, loss, uncertainty, and the challenge of deciding what she wants her life to look like.
This is a series about putting down roots.
Readers who enjoy character-led, low-key rural fiction will find a continuous story rather than a set of unrelated episodes. Melinda changes over time, and so do the people around her, which makes reading in order especially rewarding. Start with Growing Season to see the first uncertain steps of her move to Prosper, then follow the books as one year leads into the next.
