Author bio
Meghan O'Flynn was born in Detroit, Michigan, and she grew up the way a lot of serious readers do, half in the real world and half in library books. She has written about spending her early years tucked away in her room, reading through stacks from the local public library. Her father worried she was getting too solemn, so he made her balance all that reading with a dose of rude comedy on TV. That mix of darkness and humor still feels very much like her books.
She went to college at sixteen.
Once she got there, she found herself less interested in tidy fictional heroes than in the messy truth of how people actually behave. That pushed her toward psychology. After college, she spent years working in community-based mental health agencies, in schools, and in the veteran's administration. Later she moved into private practice and eventually became the Clinical Director and President of Clinical Operations for a JCAHO-accredited mental health facility.
Then she picked up a pen.
O'Flynn has said she loved her clinical work, but her creative side needed room too. That background matters when you read her fiction. Her books are full of people trying to outrun trauma, hide old damage, or make sense of minds that do not work the way they should. Even when she writes about serial killers, ghosts, or people making very bad decisions in locked rooms, the tension usually comes from character first.
A good place to see that is Famished, the Ash Park novel that helped define her early crime fiction. It drops readers into a run-down Detroit suburb, a brutal string of murders, and a heroine who knows more than she wants to admit. In Wicked Sharp, she takes a very different route and follows Poppy Pratt, a girl being raised by a serial killer who also happens to be her father. The Dead Don't Dream brings in psychologist Maggie Connolly and shows how naturally O'Flynn can build a thriller around therapy, memory, and the blurred line between victim and threat.
She also moves comfortably outside straight crime fiction. The Jilted leans into Southern Gothic horror, with nightmares, intuition, and an old evil waiting on a plantation outside New Orleans. The Flood traps a group of storm survivors in a bunker that may be more dangerous than the disaster outside. Across all of these books, readers tend to come for the fast pace and sharp twists, but they stay because the people at the center feel bruised, strange, funny, and uncomfortably real.
A lot of her fiction circles the same big questions. What does trauma do to memory? Can people really escape the families that made them? When does survival start to look a lot like guilt? Her settings help with that mood too, whether she is writing about cold Detroit streets, remote woods, flooded Louisiana, or houses that seem to hold on to the dead.
These are not tidy books.
They do, though, have a strong pulse. Even at her darkest, O'Flynn likes a little bite in the voice, a little crooked humor, and characters who keep moving even when common sense says they should run.
She now lives far from Detroit in what she jokingly describes as a muggy, mosquito-heavy swamp community with her husband, their two sons, and a giant English Mastiff named Stella Bellum Patronus. When she is not writing, she has mentioned Tetris, dark chocolate, and old comedy reruns as part of the mix. That sounds about right for an author who clearly knows that grim stories work better when there is still a little life in them.
