Author bio
Megan Frampton came to books the old-fashioned way, by being bored out of her mind. When her parents moved the family to a small town in New Hampshire, there was only one television station. Then the TV broke. She started reading through her parents' library and kept going.
That early reading life shows up in the writers she is often linked to, especially Georgette Heyer and Andrew Lang's fairy tale collections. You can feel it in her own work, too. Her romances like rules and ritual, but they also like poking holes in them.
At Barnard College, she studied English literature, with minors in religion and political science.
Before publishing novels, she spent about fifteen years in the music industry, writing and editing reviews for a trade magazine and eventually serving as editor in chief. She also helped create conference programming, which means she learned how to juggle deadlines, personalities, and a lot of words. That long stretch in magazines gave her a crisp, conversational style that suits romance especially well.
Her early fiction includes A Singular Lady and What Not to Bare, books that already show her taste for witty setups, capable heroines, and men who are not nearly as in control as they think. Later, The Duke's Guide to Correct Behavior helped launch her long run of historical romances about dukes, daughters, widows, governesses, and other people trying to behave properly while doing the opposite.
A lot of readers come to Frampton for the banter. They stay for the women. In books like Lady Be Bad, Never Kiss a Duke, and Her Lessons in Persuasion, her heroines want work, independence, pleasure, or simply the right to make their own choices. Her heroes may have titles, money, or charm, but they usually have some learning to do.
She is very good at writing people who are boxed in by society and a little startled by how much they want each other anyway.
Across series like Dukes Behaving Badly, Duke's Daughters, Hazards of Dukes, and School for Scoundrels, she returns to a few favorite ideas: reputation, class, family pressure, and the gap between public performance and private feeling. The settings are full of ballrooms, house parties, gambling rooms, and country estates, but the emotional stakes are usually personal. Who gets to choose a life. Who gets to start over. Who gets to be seen clearly.
She has also written romantic women's fiction as Megan Caldwell, and more recently has branched into fantasy-leaning romance with Demons and Diplomacy. Even with the change in setting, the through line is familiar, smart women, sharp dialogue, and love stories built on negotiation as much as attraction.
Frampton lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband and daughter. In her author bios, she has been consistent about a few other facts too: she likes the color black, gin, dark-haired British men, and big earrings. It feels about right. Her books take pleasure seriously, but they never forget to have fun.
