The engine of Duke's Daughters is family scandal. One daughter of the Duke of Marymount runs off with her dancing master, and the gossip does not stay neatly attached to just one sister. Suddenly every Howlett daughter is living in the shadow of that story, whether she wants to or not.

That setup gives the series its shape. Lady Be Bad follows Eleanor, the dutiful eldest sister, who is supposed to repair the family's name with a sensible marriage. Lady Be Reckless shifts to Olivia, whose impulsive nature lands her in a far messier and more interesting emotional tangle. The Lady Is Daring lets bookish Ida step out of the background and into an adventure of her own, proving that the quiet sister may be the boldest of the lot.

These sisters have been raised to perform grace, not necessarily to live honestly.

Later books complicate the original scandal in useful ways. Never a Bride returns to Della, the sister whose earlier choices set the whole series in motion, and gives her a chance to be seen as more than a cautionary tale. The Earl's Christmas Pearl rounds out the family story with Pearl, a holiday setting, and a romance that leans warm and funny without losing the series' interest in independence.

What makes this series work is that Frampton does not write the Howlett sisters as copies of one another. One is dutiful, one impulsive, one observant, one wounded by reputation, one eager to test her own competence. The men around them are just as varied, from polished aristocrats to outsiders and reluctant heirs. Each pairing changes the feel of the story while keeping the family connection strong.

The setting is largely London society, where every visit, proposal, and whispered remark has weight, but the books are happiest when the characters slip outside the script. Road journeys, private rooms, holiday houses, and fake engagements create room for honesty. That is where these romances breathe.

If you like sibling dynamics, reputation drama, and heroines who keep surprising the people around them, this is one of Frampton's most inviting series.
