Author bio

Meg Jolly is a British crime writer whose fiction stays close to home. She was born and raised in West Yorkshire, and she continues to live there with her family. That landscape, from the streets of Bradford to the towns and moors beyond it, gives her DI Daniel Ward mysteries their sense of place.

Yorkshire is not just a backdrop in Jolly's work. It is where the investigations begin, where people know one another's histories, and where a quiet-looking community can hold a surprising number of secrets.

Her published DI Daniel Ward series began in 2021 with The Truth We Can't Hide, a short introduction to the detective. In it, Ward is called to the village of Silsden after a local doctor is murdered. The case establishes the series' mix of close-knit communities, hidden motives, and the pressure of finding the truth before another person is hurt.

The first full-length novel, The Past We Run From, moves to Bradford and gives Ward a desperate missing-child investigation. A toddler disappears from a busy park, and the search is complicated by the presence of a known child killer and a group of vigilantes determined to take justice into their own hands.

That tension between official policing and personal revenge runs through much of Jolly's work. The Revenge We Seek follows a murder near Bingley and a second woman's disappearance. The Mistakes We Deny sends Ward to Skipton after the killing of a wealthy businessman nobody seems to mourn. Each book gives the team a new case while also keeping an eye on the wider criminal threat posed by Bogdan Varga.

The cases keep moving.

In The Justice We Serve, Ward and Nowak face a killer whose victims appear to have been chosen from a list. The Power We Exploit brings a darker Christmas mood to Bradford, where an unseen murderer targets people across the city. Jolly also expands Ward's working world as new colleagues join the team and bring their own perspectives to the investigation.

Her stories are police procedurals, but they make room for the people doing the work. Ward has a team around him, cases pile up, and private strain does not pause just because a murder inquiry needs attention. The books balance active investigations with continuing relationships and the longer effort to dismantle Varga's criminal network.

Readers looking for brisk Yorkshire crime fiction will find familiar pleasures here: urgent cases, local settings, multiple suspects, and clues that do not settle into place too easily. The novels visit Bradford, Bingley, Keighley, Skipton, Harrogate, Settle, and other corners of the county, using each location as part of the story rather than simple scenery.

Jolly is a USA Today bestselling author. Away from the page, she has described enjoying time with her family, reading with a cup of tea, and walking on the West Yorkshire moors. It is easy to see why those places continue to feed the atmosphere of the DI Daniel Ward books.

For new readers, The Truth We Can't Hide offers a quick first meeting with Ward, while The Past We Run From is the best place to begin the main run of novels. From there, the series rewards reading in order, especially for anyone who wants to follow Ward, his colleagues, and the Varga investigation as they develop.
