Series background & context
Medallion Cartel is Erin Trejo's dark romance series about relationships shaped by criminal power and restrictions on who can be with whom. The three books are Cruz, Matteo, and Javier, each named for a man at the center of a romance. Their shared world makes attraction a potentially dangerous choice. Family authority, work, and the threat of retaliation all reach into what might otherwise be a private relationship.
Cruz opens with a man whose role is to guard a woman he is not permitted to pursue. His responsibility puts him close to her, but that same responsibility creates the boundary between them. Her father represents a real threat if he steps across it. The setup makes his feelings a conflict with the job itself: caring for her as a protector and wanting her as a partner lead him toward different obligations.
Being close is part of the danger.
The first romance draws its suspense from that lack of distance. Cruz cannot treat the attraction as something happening outside his daily responsibilities, and keeping his desire private does not remove the father's power over them. The cartel setting gives the prohibition weight. Defiance is more than a breach of professional expectations, and the question of who gets to make decisions about the woman's life sits behind the romantic conflict.
Matteo turns to a relationship complicated by another imbalance of power. Syx works for Matteo, and he wants a personal connection that goes beyond their existing arrangement. At the same time, someone has made her a target. His determination to keep her safe brings attraction and protection together, but defending her can involve a larger fight. A relationship that begins within his working world pulls him toward consequences beyond that immediate setting.
Across these openings, the men are not approaching romance from ordinary circumstances. Their positions offer access and a capacity to act, yet those advantages also create expectations and enemies. The women they want are part of the conflict rather than separate from it. That is the series' central tension: choosing a partner can mean challenging the people, rules, or arrangements that have structured a character's life until then.
Begin with Cruz, then continue to Matteo and Javier. This keeps the series' individual romances together and introduces its criminal world through the first forbidden relationship. Expect explicit dark romance with threats, possessiveness, and unequal power around the couples. The emotional focus is the cost of acting on desire when duty and safety seem to demand restraint, and when protection may itself require crossing a line that someone powerful expects to remain intact.
