ME Browning Books in Order

M.E. Browning writes crime fiction from the inside out. Before she published novels, she spent more than two decades in municipal law enforcement, first in California and later in Colorado, where she retired as a captain. She worked as a hostage negotiator and training officer, and she also graduated from the FBI National Academy.

She was a heavy reader long before she wore a badge. Browning has said she used to read under the covers with a flashlight and sometimes had her books taken away as punishment. Her mother hoped for something safer, maybe even librarian life, but Browning drifted into police work almost by accident after calling about an opening in Santa Barbara.

After fourteen years in California, she stepped away, went to Paris to finish an undergraduate degree in medieval studies, and then moved to Colorado. There she returned to law enforcement and rose through the ranks in Durango, handling investigations, the evidence room, records, hiring, recruitment, internal affairs, and community programs. Her name had been in print before, just not on book covers.

The writer was already there.

The move from cop to novelist was not automatic. Browning has talked about early manuscripts that leaned too hard on procedure and not enough on people. She had to learn how to let her experience support the story instead of taking it over. A difficult hostage case also stayed with her for years, and that emotional weight helped push her toward fiction that takes crime seriously without losing sight of the human cost.

She first published under the name Micki Browning with the Mer Cavallo mysteries, beginning with Adrift and followed by Beached. Those books follow a marine biologist and divemaster in the Florida Keys, and readers tend to come for the mix of underwater danger, investigation, and strong setting. Adrift was an Agatha Award finalist for Best First Novel, and Beached won Royal Palm Literary awards. She has also written short stories and nonfiction.

As M.E. Browning, she turned back toward the police procedural with the Jo Wyatt mysteries, starting with Shadow Ridge and continuing with Mercy Creek. These books move to Echo Valley, a fictional southwest Colorado town shaped by mountain weather, local history, and small-town politics. Jo Wyatt is a second-generation cop, smart and steady, with the kind of persistence that keeps a case open when everyone else wants it closed. Shadow Ridge later won the Colorado Book Award for Mystery and earned a Florida Book Awards silver medal.

The Florida Keys in the Mer Cavallo novels and the rough beauty of southwest Colorado in the Jo Wyatt books are never just backdrops. Browning keeps returning to women under pressure, secrets that travel through families and towns, and the difference between the story people tell and the truth they would rather avoid. She is also a professional divemaster, which helps explain why water, danger, and close observation show up so naturally in her work. These days she lives in Florida with her partner in crime, scuba gear, poisonous plants, and a library full of books, still writing stories where hard questions do not get easy answers.
