Author bio

CW Browning grew up in Olathe, Kansas, where making up stories started early. She has said she was writing before she could spell, and as a kid she turned backyard play with her best friend into full adventures. By the time she was eight, she had written an eighteen-chapter novel and printed it on a dot-matrix printer. The urge to tell stories was there from the start.

She was serious about storytelling long before anyone could call it a career.

Like a lot of writers, she did not move in a straight line. Writing took a backseat for a while as life got busy. Later, after studying History at Rutgers University, she found her way back to it. She has described picking up an old manuscript, dusting it off, and returning to the thing that made her feel most like herself.

That background helps explain the books she writes now. Browning's fiction lives in the space where suspense, espionage, and personal history overlap. Her stories often follow highly capable women who know how to survive pressure, but who still have to wrestle with trust, loyalty, and the parts of themselves they thought they had left behind.

A lot of readers first meet her through Next Exit, Three Miles, the opening novel in the Exit series. It introduces Alina Maschik, a trained assassin whose work drags her back to New Jersey and back into the life she thought she had escaped. The later Exit books, including Next Exit, Pay Toll and Next Exit, Dead Ahead, keep building on that mix of black ops danger and hometown complications. Readers who like fast plotting, recurring allies, and conspiracies with a personal sting usually do well here.

Place matters in her books.

Her Shadows of War novels show a different side of her work. Starting with The Courier and moving through The Oslo Affair, Night Falls on Norway, The Iron Storm, and Into the Iron Shadows, the series follows Evelyn Ainsworth through the early years of World War II. These books keep the pace of a thriller, but they also pay close attention to setting, Paris before the fall, Norway under invasion, Belgium in chaos, and a Europe changing by the week. If you like espionage stories with real historical pressure behind them, this is probably the shelf to head for.

Then there is Kai Corbyn. In Games of Deceit and Close Target, Browning turns fully toward international spy fiction, with Mossad, CIA agents, covert missions, and orders that never mean only one thing. Kai is cool-headed, dangerous, and never as free of her past as she would like to be. These books have a sharper, more stripped-down spy feel, while still keeping Browning's interest in hidden motives and impossible choices.

These are action books, but they are not only about action. Again and again, Browning comes back to questions of identity, home, betrayal, and what happens when a person who has been trained to disappear is forced into old relationships or public danger. She likes big stakes, but she also likes the human mess that comes with them.

She now lives in Southern New Jersey. By her own account, she still makes up stories, just not for backyard play anymore. When she is not writing, she enjoys grilling steak and sipping red wine on the patio. That mix of grounded detail and restless imagination feels a lot like the books themselves.
