Series background & context
McCormick's Creek is the series that started Jen Peters's fiction career, and it lays out a lot of what she does best. These are sweet, small-town romances set in Oregon, with each book following a different couple while the town itself slowly becomes familiar. The books are clean and welcoming, and even when characters come in with heavy baggage, the overall feeling is hopeful rather than dark.
The first story, Trusting His Heart, begins with renovation work on the old McCormick mansion, and that project helps shape the series in a practical way. Characters cross paths through jobs, family ties, town businesses, and the slow transformation of old properties into new community spaces. By the time you get further into the series, McCormick's Creek feels lived in. There is a flower shop, a restaurant, a café, an inn, local law enforcement, and a network of people who keep running into one another.
That lets Peters write books that are connected without becoming tangled. Finding Her Heart follows a suspicious lawyer and a young woman stuck in town longer than she planned. Safe in His Heart pairs a dog rescuer with a grieving ranch hand and adds one of the warmest premises in the series, an animal shelter dream. Stealing His Heart shifts toward redemption, with Raine returning to town after making a mess of her life and trying to prove she has changed.
Trust is the keyword here.
It shows up in different forms all through the series. Sometimes it means learning to believe another person. Sometimes it means admitting your own past does not have to run the future. Later books widen the emotional range a bit more. The Christmas Key to Her Heart gives the series a seasoned-romance angle through widow Nora Cooper and retired CEO Forrest Holt. Protecting Her Heart moves into friends-to-more territory and asks what happens when love collides with different ideas about justice and mercy.
One thing that makes McCormick's Creek work is its balance. The books have enough conflict to matter, but they never lose sight of comfort. Peters planned the series as clean and secular, and that comes through in the overall tone, though a few later stories let faith sit a little closer to the surface. Even then, the emphasis stays on character, community, and emotional payoff.
If you want to know what kind of writer Jen Peters is, this is a very good place to start. Begin with Trusting His Heart if you like reading a town from the ground up. If you prefer to sample the mood first, Safe in His Heart is a nice snapshot of the series at its most tender, with dogs, ranch work, and two people learning that safety and love do not have to cancel each other out.
