The McCalls is a small, early Lowell series built around one wealthy family and two romances that push hard against money, expectation, and image. In Fever and Dark Fire, the McCall name opens doors, but it also gets in the way. These are stories about people who are tired of being defined by what other people think they should want.

If you like early category romance with strong scenery and a little edge, the McCalls books are worth a look. Start with Fever, then move to Dark Fire. Together they show Lowell working out many of the themes that would define her later, bigger books.
