Fiddler and Fiora (Elizabeth Lowell) Books in Order

Fiddler and Fiora is the A. E. Maxwell mystery series Ann and Evan Maxwell wrote together, and it has a tone all its own. These books are narrated in Fiddler's dry, lived-in voice, which means even the darkest moments usually come with a little bite and a little humor. The setting is Southern California, especially the Gold Coast, but the cases wander into wine country, art circles, border trouble, Hollywood, and old-money messes.

At the center are Fiddler and Fiora Flynn, ex-spouses, sometime lovers, reluctant partners, and very much not over each other. That tension is the engine of the whole series. In Just Another Day in Paradise, Danny Flynn's trouble pulls them together. The Frog and the Scorpion, Gatsby's Vineyard, Just Enough Light to Kill, The Art of Survival, Money Burns, The King of Nothing, and Murder Hurts keep testing the partnership in new ways.

The crimes matter, but the relationship matters just as much.

Fiddler is skeptical, funny, and more dangerous than he first appears. Fiora is intuitive, clever, and often the one who sees where the emotional truth lies before he does. Together they make a very good mystery pair because they do not smooth each other out. They challenge, irritate, rescue, and occasionally corner one another into honesty.

If you like witty first-person mysteries with a strong central couple, this series is easy to recommend. Read from Just Another Day in Paradise onward. The cases stand alone well enough, but the emotional arc between Fiddler and Fiora is the real long game, and it is much more satisfying when you watch it develop book by book.
