Author bio

Maxine Paetro was born in Miami on April 19, 1946, and spent her school years in Miami Beach before heading off to college. She did not take a straight road into books. That winding route matters, because so much of her writing, sharp, curious, and quick to notice how people behave under pressure, feels shaped by the jobs and detours that came first.

After two years of college, she dropped out, spent a year in London working as a shop girl, and then moved to New York in the late 1960s. For a while she worked in sales, even lugging calculators through the meat market on Gansevoort Street. It was not glamorous. It was, however, a good education in hustle, rejection, and how to read a room fast.

From there she became a headhunter and recruiter, specializing in creative people for advertising agencies. She learned the business from the inside and eventually worked for some of the biggest New York shops, helping hire writers, art directors, and producers. While at Foote, Cone and Belding, she wrote How to Put Your Book Together and Get a Job in Advertising, a practical guide that stayed in print for decades and helped launch a lot of ad careers.

A lot of her career seems to have begun with one lucky break followed by hard work.

One of those breaks came in a rainstorm, when a stranger in a cab turned out to be a magazine editor. That led to Paetro's first magazine story and then many more. She wrote first-person adventure pieces for magazines and moved into fiction with Manshare, followed by Babydreams and Windfall. Those earlier books are lighter than the thrillers that came later, but you can already see her interest in ambition, relationships, and the mess people make when desire outruns judgment.

In the mid-1990s she was writing full-time and coauthoring Dream Lovers, the Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee book written with their son, Dodd Darin. Around that same period she reconnected with an old acquaintance from her recruiting days, James Patterson. He asked her to try a sample chapter. She wrote it before leaving on a sailing trip across the Atlantic, and midway through the voyage got word that the job was hers.

That was the start of a very long partnership.

Beginning with 4th of July in 2005, Paetro became a key part of some of Patterson's biggest series. Readers know her from the Women's Murder Club books, the Jack Morgan Private novels, the teen mystery line that starts with Confessions of a Murder Suspect, and standalones such as Swimsuit and Woman of God. What draws people in is momentum: fast chapters, early hooks, and characters with both a case to solve and a personal problem that will not wait politely in the background. In the Women's Murder Club books especially, she helped shape the mix of police work, friendship, and citywide danger that keeps the series running.

Paetro still lives in New York with her husband, John Duffy, splitting time between New York City and a home in an upstate farm town. The older she gets, the more her life story looks less like a straight ladder and more like a string of bold side turns, advertising, magazines, novels, sailing trips, and then decades of blockbuster thrillers. It suits her work. Her books tend to trust restless people, and her own career suggests she has always been one of them.
