Then The Tanzania Conspiracy takes Max to Tanzania after the murder of Valéria Michieka, a lawyer and former lover, and her daughter Sophie. Their deaths appear tied to work defending the rights and safety of people with albinism, who are targeted by violent trafficking networks. Max has to navigate grief, corruption, and a case whose connections are far bigger than they first appear.

These are suspense novels with a globe-trotting feel, but the travel has a purpose. Bolduc uses each location to explore a real pressure point, from conflict and historical persecution to exploitation and political corruption. Max is frequently out of his depth, which keeps the stories tense even when he is using his usual confidence and talent for reading people.

The series works best in publication order because Max’s past and his relationships gather weight from book to book. Still, each mystery has its own central case and setting. Expect international crime, moral gray areas, historical echoes, and a flawed lead who keeps choosing involvement when it would be safer to disappear.
