Author bio

Max Brallier writes books about kids facing impossible situations with jokes, monsters, and a surprising amount of heart. He is best known for the middle-grade series The Last Kids on Earth, along with early chapter books, comics, and offbeat humor for adults.

He was born in 1983 in Belmont, Massachusetts, and moved with his family a few times, spending parts of his childhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Reading, Massachusetts.

As a kid he devoured comic books, horror novels, and anything that blended laughs with scares. Those shelves of dog-eared paperbacks and late-night movies quietly trained him to love big creatures, cliffhangers, and underdog heroes who crack jokes when they are terrified.

In high school and college he kept writing on the side, scribbling stories and movie ideas while studying film at Ithaca College. He graduated with a degree in cinema in 2005, bringing a filmmaker’s sense of pacing, jump cuts, and visual gags to the stories he would later tell on the page.

After school he worked a series of day jobs, including time in publishing, while writing at night and on weekends. His first books were tongue-in-cheek humor titles for adults, such as Reasons to Smoke and Reasons to Drink, slim volumes filled with quick jokes meant to be shared, gifted, and left on coffee tables.

From there he shifted into longer narrative work, starting with interactive horror like Can You Survive the Zombie Apocalypse?, which lets readers choose their own bloody, funny path through the end of the world. Soon he was creating stories for younger readers too, including the sci-fi comedy Galactic Hot Dogs and the spooky school series Eerie Elementary, written under the name Jack Chabert.

Writing for kids also opened the door to animation and games. Brallier has contributed to beloved cartoon worlds such as Adventure Time, Regular Show, Steven Universe, and Uncle Grandpa, and he has helped build stories for the online adventure game Poptropica. Those projects sharpened his ear for dialogue and his sense of how stories feel when they move.

Across his books, certain ideas show up again and again: found families, weird friendships, everyday kids stepping into hero roles, and the way humor can make even the scariest moment feel survivable. Whether it is a haunted elementary school or a galaxy-spanning hot-dog truck, his worlds feel big and wild but grounded in small, very human worries.

He now lives in New York with his wife, Alyse, and their daughter, Lila. When he is not writing, he reads, watches movies, and plays games that spark new monsters, jokes, and adventures. And somewhere in there, he keeps dreaming up new ways to drop regular kids into very irregular situations—and let them save the day.
