Series background & context

Eerie Elementary is a fast-paced, spooky-but-funny chapter book series about a school that is literally alive and hungry. Third-grader Sam Graves discovers that his job as hall monitor is not about catching kids running, but about protecting everyone from the building itself.

Very early on, Sam learns that Eerie Elementary was built by a strange inventor named Orson Eerie, whose spirit still lingers in the walls. The school can grow tentacles from water fountains, turn playground equipment into monsters, and swallow kids through lockers and classroom doors. It acts like a single, plotting villain with the whole student body as potential snacks.

Sam does not face this alone. He teams up with his best friends Lucy and Antonio, and together they become a secret defense squad for the school. Each book throws a new danger at them: a locker that eats students, a recess that turns into a wild jungle, a science fair where inventions come to creepy life, or an art show where paintings attack.

The stories are short, with big illustrations and cliffhangers at the end of many chapters, making them a strong fit for early independent readers. The scares are real enough to give a tingle but are balanced with jokes, teamwork, and satisfying wins so that the overall tone stays fun rather than nightmarish.

Across the series, readers slowly learn more about Orson Eerie’s past and why the school behaves the way it does. The final books build toward a showdown that asks whether Sam and his friends can finally break the curse. For most kids, the best place to start is The School Is Alive!, then follow the books in order as the mystery deepens.
