Author bio
Matt Hilton was born in Scotland and grew up in Carlisle, Cumbria. He started writing young, long before anyone was paying him for it, and by the time he was around eleven he was already trying to write novels. Crime, horror, adventure, fantasy, he was drawn to all of it, and that mix still shows in the range of books he writes now.
Writing came early, publishing took a lot longer.
For years Hilton wrote in the gaps around real work. He spent more than two decades in private security and the police in Cumbria, experience that gave him a practical feel for violence, fear, and the way people behave under pressure. He is also a 4th Dan black belt and a Ju-Jitsu coach, which helps explain why the fight scenes in his books tend to feel grounded rather than decorative.
The big break came in 2008, when he secured an agent and a deal for the Joe Hunter novels. His debut, Dead Men's Dust, introduced readers to a former counterterrorism operative turned off-the-books problem solver, and it hit hard. The book became a Sunday Times bestseller and was shortlisted for the International Thriller Writers Debut Novel award. That was a strong start by any measure.
Joe Hunter went on to become Hilton's best-known creation. Books like Judgement and Wrath, No Safe Place, Marked for Death, and The Fourth Option built out a long-running action thriller series with a clear appeal, brutal pace, lone-wolf energy, and a hero who keeps going even when the sensible move would be to stop. Readers who like their thrillers direct, physical, and morally messy usually settle in quickly.
But Hilton has never stayed in one lane.
With Blood Tracks, he opened up the Grey and Villere books, a Maine-set thriller series built around private investigator Tess Grey and her unpredictable partner Nicolas Po Villere. Those novels keep the action, but they lean a little more into partnership, place, and the slow build of trust between damaged people. Later books such as Cold Fire show how comfortable he is balancing investigation with flat-out momentum.
He has also kept returning to horror and the supernatural. Darke mixes police work with ghosts and old trauma. Wicked Jenny and The Executioner Box turn childhood warnings into modern horror. Clashing Blades heads in a different direction again, into sword and sorcery, showing that the fantasy side he wrote as a kid never really went away.
Across all those books, a few things stay consistent. Hilton likes capable people, hard choices, and stories where violence has weight. He writes a lot about loyalty, guilt, revenge, and what happens when the past refuses to stay buried. Even when the setup involves ghosts, demons, or lost worlds, the human pressure is usually what drives the story.
He still lives in Cumbria with his wife and son, and he continues to write across thriller, horror, and fantasy. That mix is part of what makes his bibliography fun to explore. You can start with a hard-edged Joe Hunter book, wander into a haunted house novel, and end up in a sword fight, all without ever leaving the same author.
