A Package Deal

by Robin Patchen

2016

After a cancer scare leaves Jo uncertain she can ever have children, she reluctantly tries online dating on a dare from friends. Her first match is Carter, a cautious single dad who hides his daughter at first, and their growing connection depends on whether both can accept a very real package deal.

Series background & context

Matched Online is a multi author concept built around the risks and rewards of meeting someone through a dating site. Robin Patchen's novella A Package Deal fits into that world with a gentle contemporary romance that still carries her trademark emotional honesty.

The story opens with Jo, a cancer survivor who did not realize how much she wanted children until doctors told her that might never happen. At a time when she still feels fragile and unsure of her future, her friends dare her to create an online dating profile. Against her better judgment, she does, then finds herself matched with a man who seems to want all the things she fears she cannot give.

Carter is a cautious single father who has been burned by past relationships and now guards his heart almost as fiercely as he protects his little girl. When his first online match turns out to be the woman he has admired from the local shipping shop, he cannot quite believe his luck. He decides to keep quiet about his daughter at first, planning to tell Jo if the relationship grows serious, never expecting feelings to take root so fast.

As Jo and Carter tentatively move from awkward first messages to real dates, the secrets they are keeping press harder against their fragile connection. Jo wrestles with guilt and fear over her health history and what it might mean for any future family. Carter worries that revealing his daughter will cost him yet another chance at love. The tension here is not driven by external villains but by two good people trying to protect themselves from pain.

Patchen uses the online dating framework to explore questions about honesty, vulnerability, and what it takes to truly welcome someone into every part of your life. The small touches of humor, such as Jo's friends meddling and Carter's missteps, keep the tone light even as the characters confront serious issues.

Though A Package Deal is part of the larger Matched Online world, it reads easily as a stand alone novella. You do not need to track the other authors' books to follow the story, but if you enjoy seeing familiar themes play out in different ways, this corner of Patchen's bibliography offers a softer, more everyday romance alongside her higher octane suspense.

It is a sweet place to spend an evening, especially if you like stories about second chances, found family, and the surprising ways God answers long buried hopes.
