She likes sister stories, old grief, buried guilt, complicated parents and children, and romance that grows out of ordinary daily life. Her plots sometimes carry secrets or danger, but the real weight is emotional. People in these books have to learn how to trust each other, and themselves, after things have gone wrong.

McNear has said she thinks of herself less as a straight romance writer and more as a writer of women's fiction. That feels right. Love matters in her novels, but so do friendship, family duty, personal change, and the long aftershocks of loss. She describes herself writing in a local doughnut shop, sipping Diet Pepsi, watching the neighborhood hubbub, and trying not to be distracted by fresh doughnuts. It is a small detail, but a good one.
