Shannon McNear Books in Order

Shannon McNear grew up on a small farm in central Illinois, wandering the timber, riding horses, and reading the kind of books that make a kid want to try telling stories too. She started writing in third grade, and by fifteen she had finished a novel of her own.

The straight line from there to publication never happened. Instead, life filled up first. She went to a small Christian high school, spent three semesters at Liberty University, married young, and built a large family. Along the way she and her husband raised eight children, grieved the loss of one, and homeschooled for years. Writing had to live in the edges of the day, late at night, in short bursts, and in the stubborn belief that the work still mattered.

She kept going anyway.

That long season shows up in her path to print. More than thirty years after finishing that first teenage novel, she received her first book contract for a historical romance novella set during the American Revolution. That story, Defending Truth, appeared in A Pioneer Christmas Collection and went on to become a RITA finalist in 2014. Later, The Wise Guy and the Star won a 2021 SELAH Award.

What readers tend to like is how grounded her books feel. The Cumberland Bride is not just a romance on the trail, it is a story about movement, uncertainty, and how thin safety can be on the frontier. The Lost Colony novels, Elinor, Mary, Rebecca, and Virginia, take a famous American mystery and treat it as a human story first, full of hunger, divided cultures, grief, and belonging.

McNear writes a lot about border places. English settlers and Native communities. Patriots and loyalists. Families split by war. Young people who have to grow up fast because history does not wait for them to be ready. Even when the stories are gentle, there is usually pressure underneath them, a long road, a battle's aftermath, a winter camp, a settlement that may not last.

She can shift register when she wants to. The Blue Cloak turns early frontier violence into tense historical suspense, while The Highwayman and the Frontiers of Liberty stories circle back to the Revolution and its divided loyalties. Then a book like The Wise Guy and the Star pulls into a quieter Christmas setting, where grief, faith, and second chances matter as much as plot.

She is, by her own cheerful description, a history nerd.

That matters because the past in her books is never just wallpaper. McNear returns to the Roanoke colony, early settlements in what became Tennessee and Kentucky, Civil War Tennessee, the Shenandoah Valley, and even a Christmas rail journey just after World War I. Her stories are full of muddy roads, fragile settlements, wary alliances, and people trying to do decent things when the world around them is unstable.

After more than two decades in Charleston, South Carolina, she moved to North Dakota and now makes her home on the northern plains with her husband and family. She still serves in worship and youth ministry, still loves the outdoors, and still seems drawn to the places where story and history meet.
