Author bio

Mary Balogh was born in Swansea, Wales, and grew up in a postwar city where rationing and rebuilding were part of everyday life. She has often talked about being a daydreamer as a child, the kind of kid who could disappear into a story for hours, even when the world outside felt cramped and gray.

She left Wales as a young adult and moved to Canada on a teaching contract, expecting an adventure and a start to her working life. Canada became home. She married Robert Balogh, raised three children, and spent years in Saskatchewan building a career in education, including time as a school principal.

Then she found Regency romance.

Reading writers who brought the early 1800s to life helped her see what she wanted to write, too: love stories shaped by strict social rules, sharp choices, and private longings. She began writing while balancing family and a demanding day job, carving out time where she could and finishing drafts the way a lot of working writers do, one stolen hour at a time.

Her first published novel was A Masked Deception, and it set the tone for much of what came after. Balogh has gone on to write more than a hundred novels and novellas, most of them historical romances set in Britain. Over the years, her books have turned up on major bestseller lists, and her long-running series have brought new readers in by the thousands.

What keeps people with her is the mix of comfort and complication. The settings are often familiar to historical romance readers, country estates, London seasons, house parties, but the emotional stakes stay personal. Balogh is interested in what happens after a bad decision, after a war, after a loss, after a reputation cracks. Her characters fall in love, but they also have to live with themselves.

Across the books you'll meet wounded soldiers and sailors, teachers and widows, governesses trying to stay invisible, and women who have been judged too quickly by polite society. She also likes the way lives overlap. A character who is center stage in one book might drift through another as a friend, a sibling, or the person who quietly changes a scene with one honest line.

Some readers start with the big family sagas, like the Bedwyn novels that begin with Slightly Married. Others come in through the gentler, healing-focused books, like the Survivor's Club series, which includes The Arrangement and Only Beloved. And if you like a large cast that keeps weaving in and out of each other's lives, the Westcott and Ravenswood books, starting with Someone to Love and Remember Love, were built for that kind of binge reading.

Her books are romantic, but they don't ignore consequences.

Balogh has lived in Canada for decades and still calls Saskatchewan home. She and her husband have children, grandchildren, and even a great-grandchild, and her author life has settled into the steady rhythm of someone who has been doing the work for a long time. New releases keep arriving, and so do readers who discover, sometimes with surprise, that a Regency romance can feel both escapist and quietly true.
