Martin Michaud Books in Order

Martin Michaud was born in Quebec City in 1970 and has built much of his working life in and around Montreal. Before crime fiction took over, he studied law at Université Laval and went on to work for years in business law, including technology-related legal work. Those years gave him a close look at institutions, power, and the careful language people use when the stakes are high.

Writing found him anyway. He has said that a poetry class gave him the first real jolt, the feeling that words could do more than simply explain things.

For a long time, music carried that creative energy. Michaud played guitar, sang, and wrote lyrics for the francophone rock band m-jeanne. Even while he was building a demanding legal career, he was still looking for a way to tell stories that felt more personal and less procedural than the documents on his desk.

The turn toward fiction happened gradually, then all at once. In 2005 he founded Longitudes zéro, a company focused on screenwriting work, and he began pushing harder toward narrative writing. His first Victor Lessard novel, Il ne faut pas parler dans l'ascenseur, was published in 2010 after sitting in a drawer for a time while he continued working, including a period as legal counsel at Radio-Canada. By 2012, he had stepped away from law and committed to writing full time.

That changed everything.

The books that followed made Victor Lessard his signature character. English-language readers often start with Without Blood, The Devil's Choir, and Never Forget, three Montreal-set thrillers that mix police work with conspiracy, old wounds, and the uneasy feeling that institutions can hide just as much as criminals do. Michaud's detective is sharp, stubborn, and deeply human, and the cases around him tend to sprawl in ways that feel messy, political, and painfully close to real life.

Memory, secrecy, and moral pressure show up again and again in Michaud's work. Never Forget turns a suicide and a pair of violent deaths into a larger reckoning with buried history. The Devil's Choir digs into family violence, kidnapping, hidden groups, and the way the past keeps pressing on the present. Outside the series, he has widened the field with books like Beneath the Surface, set against American political machinery in Massachusetts, and When I Was Theodore Seaborn, a stranger and more intimate thriller about a Montreal man whose life starts slipping out of shape.

He did not stop at novels, either. Michaud moved into screenwriting and worked on the television adaptation of Victor Lessard, helping bring the books to the screen in the French-language series that launched in 2017. That crossover makes sense when you read him. His chapters are visual, his scenes arrive under pressure, and his old legal training shows up in the way he builds motive, evidence, and consequence.

These days he continues to write both fiction and screen projects from Quebec, returning often to crime, identity, and the cracks in ordinary lives.
