Buried Lies
by Kristina Ohlsson
2017
High flying defense attorney Martin Benner agrees to revisit the case of Sara Texas, a dead woman who confessed to five brutal murders, and to track down her missing son, only to discover that taking the job makes him a target.
Series background & context
Martin Benner is not a cop but a star defense lawyer, the kind who wears sharp suits, picks his clients, and assumes he is the smartest person in the room. When the series opens in Buried Lies, that confidence is exactly what a desperate man named Bobby T needs.
Bobby asks Martin to help clear his sister, Sara Texas, a woman who confessed to five murders before killing herself, and to find Sara's missing little boy, Mio. On paper the case is impossible and Martin knows he should decline, yet the challenge and the money prove hard to resist.
The deeper he digs, the stranger things become. Witnesses are evasive, evidence feels staged, and it starts to look as if someone is using Martin as a pawn. His glamorous life of parties, women, and expensive cars collides with threats, blackmail, and visits to seedy bars and dusty back roads, including a dangerous trail that leads all the way to Texas.
In The Lies We Tell, the second book, the consequences truly hit. Mio is still missing, people connected to Martin's investigation begin to die, and the police turn their attention to him. Rumors, planted clues, and half truths make him look more and more like a suspect instead of a defender.
Throughout the duology Ohlsson keeps the pace high and the tone hard boiled. The books are told largely from Martin's point of view, so readers sit inside the head of a man who is smart, often selfish, and slowly forced to confront what he is willing to sacrifice for justice, for his own skin, and for a child he has never met.
The Martin Benner stories move between polished law offices, anonymous hotel rooms, rough Swedish neighborhoods, and sun blasted American highways. The tension comes as much from Martin's shifting loyalties and crumbling certainty as from the gunmen, corrupt officials, and professional criminals who step out of the shadows as he pushes on.
Because the plot threads run straight from Buried Lies into The Lies We Tell, these books work best read in order. Together they form one long, twisting case about truth, reputation, and the cost of deciding whose side you are really on.
