Series background & context

The Glass Children series takes Kristina Ohlsson's love of mystery into the lives of younger readers. The stories center on Billie, a girl whose father has died and whose mother moves her from the city to an old house in a small coastal town that never quite feels welcoming.

In The Glass Children, Billie and her mother arrive to find the previous owners' furniture still in place, along with two fragile glass figurines of a boy and a girl. Almost at once strange things start happening: lights swing on their own, objects move, and small handprints appear where no child has been.

Adult explanations do not help much. Billie's mother thinks grief and homesickness are behind the unease, and the neighbors are reluctant to talk about the building's past. With her new friend Aladdin and her old friend Simona, Billie begins to investigate who lived there before and why the house seems so determined to drive them out.

The Silver Boy shifts the spotlight slightly to Aladdin. His parents run a restaurant, and when food starts disappearing from the kitchen, he and his friends suspect a thief. Instead they keep glimpsing a thin boy in old fashioned clothes who never leaves footprints in the snow, and the search for answers uncovers hidden loot, buried grudges, and another piece of the town's haunted history.

Ohlsson balances eerie, goosebump moments with the everyday worries of school, friendship, and family. The ghosts and mysteries are frightening enough to keep pages turning, but the stories stay grounded in Billie's grief, her mother's effort to start over, and the courage it takes to face both real and imagined dangers.

Across the trilogy the children keep pushing for the truth even when adults prefer silence. Each book offers a complete mystery, yet together they trace how uncovering the past can help Billie and her friends understand their own fears and find a place that finally feels like home.
