Series background & context
Marked Men is the series that made Jay Crownover a major name in contemporary new adult romance. It is set around Denver, tattoo shops, music, bars, chosen family, and young people who are old enough to make life-changing choices but still young enough to make the messy ones first.
Start with Rule.
The first book follows Rule Archer and Shaw Landon, two people who have known each other for years and seem wrong for each other in every obvious way. Shaw is the good student with a carefully managed life. Rule is tattooed, pierced, restless, and grieving his twin brother. Their romance sets the pattern for the series: opposites, history, heat, pain, and a stubborn refusal to let the world define who belongs with whom.
Jet brings in rocker Jet Keller and Southern transplant Ayden Cross. Rome follows Rule’s older brother after military service, pairing him with Cora Lewis, the colorful glue holding much of the friend group together. Nash turns to Nash Donovan and nurse Saint Ford, using old high school pain and new family secrets. Rowdy gives Rowdy St. James a second chance when Salem Cruz walks back into his life. Asa closes the core series with Asa Cross, a charming man with a criminal past, and Royal Hastings, a cop dealing with her own crisis.
The books are very much of the new adult romance wave: big emotions, found family, complicated pasts, and heroes who look dangerous but are often softer once the right person gets close. Tattoos are part of the style, but they also signal Crownover’s interest in self-expression and being judged from the outside.
The series works best in order because friendships, siblings, and side characters build from book to book. It also sets up Saints of Denver and, later, The Forever Marked.
If you want to understand Jay Crownover’s romance world, this is the front door.
