Series background & context
The Mark of the Lion series is an immersive Christian historical saga set in the first century, in the shadow of the Roman Empire. Across three novels, it follows slaves and aristocrats, gladiators and merchants, all wrestling with power, pleasure, and the disruptive message of early Christianity.
In A Voice in the Wind, the heart of the story is Hadassah, a young Jewish Christian who survives the destruction of Jerusalem only to be sold as a slave into a wealthy Roman household. Quiet and outwardly unremarkable, she serves Julia Valerian, a restless young woman hungry for excitement, and meets Julia’s brother Marcus, a charming aristocrat who lives for comfort and success. At the same time, a fierce Germanic warrior named Atretes is captured and forced into the arena as a gladiator. The three storylines intersect in Rome’s crowded streets and decadent villas, where Hadassah’s hidden faith stands in stark contrast to the emptiness she sees around her.
An Echo in the Darkness picks up in the aftermath of terrible loss. Believing Hadassah dead, Marcus travels to Israel searching for the God she trusted, even as he grapples with his own guilt and grief. Hadassah’s path takes a different turn when a young physician named Alexander discovers that she has survived. While he nurses her back to health, Julia’s reckless choices leave her physically and emotionally scarred. The second book traces parallel journeys of repentance, forgiveness, and costly love as these characters are drawn back toward one another.
As Sure as the Dawn shifts the center of the narrative to Atretes, now a famed gladiator who has finally won his freedom. Convinced that his infant son is dead, he is stunned to learn the child is alive and being raised by Rizpah, a Christian widow. Determined to reclaim the boy and return to his tribal homeland in Germania, Atretes clashes with Rizpah over faith, loyalty, and what it means to be a father. Their journey north leads into a world of forest strongholds, tribal politics, and spiritual conflict where the claims of Christ run directly against ancestral traditions.
Across all three novels, Rivers paints the opulence and brutality of Rome—its baths, banquets, circuses, and slave markets—alongside the fragile house churches and persecuted believers of the time. The series is known for its emotional intensity, vivid set pieces, and willingness to show both the cost and the comfort of following Jesus in a hostile culture.
Although each book has its own arc and focus, the lives of Hadassah, Marcus, Julia, Atretes, and Rizpah are deeply intertwined, so the series is best read in order. Readers can expect romance, battles, martyrdom, and miracles, but also quiet scenes of friendship, doubt, and daily obedience that give the epic moments their weight.
