Author bio

Mark Newhouse was born in a displaced persons camp in Germany after his parents survived the Holocaust. When he was still a baby, the family came to the United States and started over with very little.

He grew up in a home marked by survival, hard work, and a lot that was left unsaid. Newhouse has said that his parents' struggles, their troubled marriage, and his own years of being bullied shaped him deeply. Writing started young, as a way to sort through fear, anger, and hope.

It was his private tool before it became his public work.

Long before the historical novels, Newhouse built a life in education. He taught in Central Islip on Long Island, later served as an adjunct professor of education at SUNY Old Westbury, and was named Teacher of the Year by the New York State Reading Association in 1989. His first published book grew out of school and community projects, not a big career plan.

As a boy he loved Sherlock Holmes and Perry Mason. Perry Mason especially stayed with him because the character gave him a goal: study hard, stay out of trouble, and become useful. That mix of mystery and law would show up again years later in his fiction for younger readers.

You can see it in Rockhound Science Mysteries, where kids crack comic cases with simple experiments, and in Welcome to Monstrovia and its sequels, where Brodie Adkins gets pulled into legal chaos with Jasper Doofinch, a lawyer for monsters, giants, and dragons. These books are funny, fast, and built around problem-solving. Newhouse clearly likes heroes who think their way through trouble.

He likes underdogs.

That same instinct drives The Midnight Diet Club, a darkly funny YA novel about bullying, body image, and the dangerous pull of popularity. Newhouse has said his concern about bullying pushed him toward the book. Even when his stories turn spooky or absurd, he tends to write about kids who need courage, judgment, and real friends more than magic.

His later work took a much heavier turn with The Noose, The Noose Tightens, and The Noose Closes. After finding The Chronicle of the Lodz Ghetto among his mother's belongings, he began writing fiction rooted in the same Polish ghetto his family had survived. The result was The Devil's Bookkeepers, a trilogy that brings together archival history, family memory, suspense, love, and impossible moral pressure. It also shows another side of him, the writer who wants difficult history remembered in human terms.

Newhouse now lives in Florida with his wife and stays active in writing and literacy communities. He has spoken in schools and libraries, worked to encourage young readers and writers, and talked publicly about the Holocaust, prejudice, and endurance. Across very different books, his aim stays surprisingly steady: help readers laugh, think, remember, and keep going.
