The second book widens the series’ view of San Antonio power. Mark is pushed by politicians, judges, the press, and people with enough influence to expect the law to bend for them. At the same time, the case depends on children whose voices are easy for adults to dismiss. It is a tense legal story, but it keeps the human cost of the crime in view.

Across both novels, Mark is capable, ambitious, and far from untouched by compromise.
