Series background & context

The Edward Hall books are legal thrillers about a lawyer trying to return to a life he thought he had lost. Edward begins the series fresh out of prison and without his law license, carrying the baggage of past mistakes into every new problem. He knows the courtroom well, but getting back into one is neither simple nor safe.

Houston is the backdrop, and it matters. These are cases shaped by prosecutors, judges, media attention, and the private history that follows people through the justice system. Edward is not arriving as a polished hero with a secure career. He is an outsider who has to prove, again and again, that he can still do the work.

In Against the Law, Edward’s sister, Dr. Amy Hall, is arrested for murdering her former husband. Amy turns to Edward because she believes he is the one person who will fight hard enough for her, even though his own legal career is over. The case pulls him back into court and puts him opposite Judge Cynthia, whose role in Edward’s past makes the trial especially personal.

Edward is not built to walk away from a fight.

The second book, From the Grave, gives him a tempting route toward professional redemption. Houston district attorney Julia Lipscomb offers Edward a chance to represent a former client, Donald Willis, in a kidnapping case. If he handles the trial well, the state bar may consider restoring his license on probation. The problem is that the alleged victim is Julia’s sister, and the arrangement comes with pressures that make a fair defense difficult.

That setup captures what links the series. Edward’s cases are never only about evidence and procedure. They ask what a lawyer owes a client when powerful people have a preferred outcome, and what it means to seek a second chance without becoming somebody else’s tool. The books keep the focus close to Edward, while letting the legal system create the deadlines, traps, and moral compromises.

Expect brisk courtroom scenes, family stakes, and a protagonist who has plenty to lose beyond a verdict. Start with Against the Law for Edward’s history and his first return to the courtroom, then continue with From the Grave. The cases stand on their own, but reading in order makes Edward’s hard-won attempt to rebuild his life more satisfying.
