This series opens with a great odd-couple setup. Las Vegas police sergeant Jane Kurtz is pushed into starting a cold case unit, and one of the civilians she brings in is Marco Cortes, a brilliant, difficult young man with a photographic memory and very little patience for playing things the normal way.

That mismatch drives the books.

Marco is not a polished detective. He is a self-taught thinker, a rideshare driver, a side-hustle survivor, and the kind of person who notices patterns other people miss. Jane, by contrast, comes from the official side of policing, even if she is already in trouble with her own department when the series begins. That contrast gives the series some of its texture. Beneath the casinos and neon, these books are interested in damaged lives, institutional blind spots, and the way old violence keeps echoing.

The tone is lighter on the page than a grim procedural, but the cases are still real cases. Marco can be funny without turning the story into a parody, and Jane's frustration keeps the stakes grounded. Their partnership works because each fills in something the other lacks.

At the moment, Vegas Murder Mystery is the clear starting point and the book that establishes the rhythm. If you like cold case fiction with a strong character hook, a modern city setting, and a detective pairing that feels a little offbeat in a good way, this is a promising Trevor Scott branch to try.
