Author bio
Mandasue Heller was born in Warrington, Cheshire, and grew up with the lights of the stage in her eyes. As a child she spent much of her free time in amateur dramatics, pantomimes and Old Time Music Hall shows, often singing as well as acting.
By her late teens she was touring working men’s clubs around the UK with a country-and-western band called Missouri Sunshine. Long nights on the road, smoky rooms and sharp-eyed audiences taught her how people talk, argue and perform when the stakes feel high.
She joined the performers’ union Equity and picked up small roles in television dramas such as Boys from the Blackstuff, Coronation Street, Brookside, Watching and Albion Market. Acting, singing and gig work paid the bills, but they also kept her close to the stories and voices she would later write about.
In 1982 she moved to Manchester and spent ten years living in the notorious Hulme Crescents. The estate was rough, vibrant and full of creative people. By day she saw the reality of poverty, crime and addiction; by night she fronted rock bands and sang for blues, soul and jazz outfits in the city’s underground music scene.
Her life pivoted in the 1990s when a serious illness, including surgery on a tumour affecting her eyesight, forced her off the stage and into bed for months. Years earlier she had survived a brutal attack in her own flat, when an intruder struck her with a claw hammer as she slept with her ten-week-old son in her arms. During her recovery she borrowed a basic word processor and wrote that experience down, hoping that putting it into words would loosen its grip on her.
The piece was too personal to show anyone, but the act of writing hooked her. She turned away from autobiography and began to invent characters instead, using Hulme as the backdrop. That work became her debut crime novel, The Front, in which a botched robbery on a Manchester estate pulls four friends deep into the city’s criminal underworld.
Since then she has written a long run of gritty, stand-alone thrillers. Books like Forget Me Not, Tainted Lives, Lost Angel, Broke, Afraid, Run, Save Me, Witness and Running Scared follow ordinary people – often women, teenagers and working-class families – who find themselves trapped between loyalty and survival on estates, in nightclubs and in back-street flats. Her stories are full of debt collectors, drug crews, traffickers and abusers, but they are just as interested in neighbours, friendships and the small acts of kindness that help people hang on.
Heller often writes from the viewpoint of those on the wrong side of the law as well as their victims. She is drawn to characters who make bad decisions for reasons that feel painfully understandable, and she rarely offers simple heroes or villains. The tone is tough and unsentimental, but there is usually a thread of hope running through the violence and betrayal.
Over the years her Manchester-set crime novels have reached the bestseller lists and sold more than a million copies, building a loyal readership who recognise the streets and voices on the page. She now writes full time, both novels and scripts, but music has never quite let her go.
She still lives in Manchester, dividing her time between writing, three grown children, several grandchildren and the studio where she records songs with her musician and producer partner, Wingrove Ward.
