Malibu Mysteries Books in Order

At the center of the Malibu Mysteries is Sofia Salgado, a former child star who spent years playing a TV detective on Half Pint Detective before deciding she would rather do the job for real. She quits acting, joins Maloney Investigations, and discovers that real stakeouts are a lot messier than scripts. Sofia is smart, funny, stubborn, and often in over her head, which is exactly why the series works.

She does not walk into the job as some instant super-sleuth.

Instead, the books get a lot of mileage out of watching her learn. Brendan Maloney runs the agency, Aidan Maloney is the co-worker who can help or annoy in equal measure, and Sofia keeps getting pulled between old Hollywood baggage and her new life as a trainee investigator. The setting matters a lot here. Malibu is not just sun, beaches, and celebrity houses. It is rehab clinics, gossip, private compounds, rich eccentrics, wellness fads, and people who think money can tidy up any mess.

That gives the series a great engine for cases. One book sends Sofia undercover in rehab. Another turns a search for a boy's father into a comic but urgent race against time. Later stories move through vineyard feuds, blackmail schemes, male revue trouble, celebrity parties, and a cult operating behind a glossy self-help front. The stories are funny on the surface, but they do not forget that people can get hurt.

Malibu is sunlit, expensive, and deeply strange.

The tone is lighter than Sean Black's Ryan Lock books, yet the mysteries still have real stakes. Sofia's voice keeps things buoyant, especially when she is improvising badly, talking herself into trouble, or trying to look professional while everything goes sideways. A big part of the appeal is that she cares. She wants to be taken seriously, wants to do the right thing, and keeps showing up even when she is outmatched.

Supporting characters help a lot. Fred the seagull becomes one of the running jokes of the series, and the books make good use of family, agency politics, and Malibu's endless supply of oddballs. If you like private-investigator stories that mix chaos with competence, and murder with a lot of side-eye, this is a very easy series to sink into.

Reading in order is the best move. Sofia grows from book to book, her relationships shift, and the running jokes land better once you have met the whole crew. Start with A is for Asshat, then keep going alphabetically. The mystery plots stand on their own, but the fun of the series is watching Sofia become the detective she only used to pretend to be.
