Series background & context
These are Darlene Ryan's cat-led cozies under the name Sofie Kelly. The series opens with Curiosity Thrilled the Cat, when librarian Kathleen Paulson moves to Mayville Heights, Minnesota, and unexpectedly ends up with two stray cats, Owen and Hercules. Before long she learns the cats have talents that are not remotely normal. Owen can turn invisible. Hercules can walk through walls. That sounds like a big fantasy swing, but the books stay firmly in cozy mystery territory.
The magic is there to complicate life, not replace detective work.
Kathleen still has to do the real investigating. She works at the town library, talks to neighbors, follows half-finished stories, and pays attention when something does not fit. Owen and Hercules may nudge her toward clues, but they do not solve the murders for her. That balance is a big part of the series' appeal. You get the fun of magical cats, but the mysteries still have suspects, motives, town politics, and the steady logic of a classic whodunit.
Mayville Heights matters just as much as the cats. The library sits at the center of community life, so Kathleen keeps getting pulled into art exhibits, music festivals, theater productions, charity events, and local disputes that turn surprisingly dangerous. Because the town feels close-knit, each case carries emotional weight. Victims are rarely strangers dropped in from outside. They are usually connected to people Kathleen knows, which keeps the stories personal without making them bleak.
The books also reward reading in order. Kathleen's relationship with Detective Marcus Gordon grows over time, and friends, coworkers, artists, and neighbors keep returning often enough that the series builds a real sense of continuity. Start with Curiosity Thrilled the Cat and you get to watch Kathleen's world come together naturally, including the odd household rhythm created by two cats who clearly think they should be consulted on everything.
The tone is warm, lightly funny, and easy to settle into. There are murders, but there is also library talk, small-town gossip, food, community events, and plenty of cat behavior that is funny even before the magic starts. If you like cozy mysteries with a strong sense of place and a playful supernatural twist, this is one of the friendliest entry points in Ryan's bibliography.
