Author bio
Darlene Ryan was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, in 1958 and spent much of her childhood outside Saint John. Before writing became the center of her working life, she studied forestry and biology at the University of New Brunswick, earned a science degree in 1980, and later completed a Bachelor of Education at St. Thomas University. She had a long list of jobs along the way, including lab instructor, fitness instructor, radio copywriter, journalist, and editor.
Writing started early. Ryan liked to joke that she won third prize in a poetry contest in third grade, and she kept at it for years after that. She wrote radio commercials, short pieces, and plenty of stories that never made it into print. That long apprenticeship matters, because her books tend to feel lean, direct, and hard to put down.
Her first book was A Mother's Adoption Journey in 2001, a memoir drawn from her own experience of deciding to pursue adoption after years of marriage. It mixes diary-like honesty with practical detail, which tells you a lot about the kind of writer she was. Ryan cared about emotion, but she also cared about helping readers make sense of a messy process.
She liked stories that could do both.
That same mix shows up in her young adult novels. Rules for Life, Saving Grace, Responsible, Five Minutes More, Pieces of Me, and Cuts Like a Knife all put teenagers under real pressure. She writes about grief, adoption, bullying, depression, homelessness, and family strain, but she does not turn those subjects into lectures. The focus stays on character, on the small choices people make when they are scared, cornered, or trying to hold a family together.
Readers who start with the YA books usually notice how grounded they are. In Rules for Life, Izzy tries to keep order after her mother's death and her brother's troubles. In Five Minutes More, D'Arcy has to face the truth about her father's suicide. In Pieces of Me, Maddie is living on the street and trying to protect a younger child. Even when Ryan takes on heavy material, she writes in a clear, approachable way that never talks down to teen readers.
Then she built a second writing life.
Under the name Sofie Kelly, Ryan launched the Magical Cats mysteries with Curiosity Thrilled the Cat in 2011. Those books follow librarian Kathleen Paulson in Mayville Heights, Minnesota, with two unusual cats, Owen and Hercules, helping her nose around murder cases. Under the name Sofie Ryan, she began the Second Chance Cat mysteries with The Whole Cat and Caboodle in 2014, centering on Sarah Grayson, her secondhand shop in North Harbor, Maine, and a rescue cat named Elvis. The tone is cozier there, but the same strengths carry over: lively communities, recurring friendships, and trouble arriving right in the middle of ordinary life.
Ryan's own interests show through around the edges. She practiced Wu style tai chi, loved to read, enjoyed cooking and swimming, made mixed-media art, and liked wandering thrift stores. She lived in Fredericton, New Brunswick, for many years. Ryan died in 2026, leaving behind a body of work that moves from memoir to realistic YA to cat-filled cozy mystery, all tied together by curiosity, brisk storytelling, and a real affection for flawed people trying to do their best.
