Series background & context

The Magic series begins and, in this listing, stands with Magic's Design, a contemporary fantasy romance by Cat Adams. It is a self-contained story, but it has the kind of layered magical world readers may recognize from the authors' other work: secret powers exist beside ordinary life, old rules are hidden in family history, and a personal problem turns out to be tied to something much larger.

Mila Penkin is at the center of the book. She is a Ukrainian egg artist with a gift for healing, though she does not fully understand what that gift means. Her skills and the traditions passed down through her family have deeper magical roots than she realizes. When her life starts to open into a world she never knew was real, Mila has to revisit what she thinks she knows about herself and her past.

Then Talos Onan arrives.

Talos is an agent of the Overworld Police, a magic-user assigned to capture Vegre, a criminal who has escaped from a hidden magical prison. He is injured when he encounters Mila, and her unexpected ability to heal him puts both of them on the same path. Their connection is not just romantic. It leads them toward questions about stolen memories, magical inheritance, and the fragile source of magic itself.

The larger threat concerns the Sacred Tree of Life. If it fails, the damage will reach beyond one person or one magical community. Mila's healing ability becomes important in a fight that asks her to take responsibility for powers she never asked to have. Talos has training and a clear mission, but Mila's perspective and knowledge are equally necessary.

The book blends a modern setting with folklore, magical policing, underground prisons, and a hidden society of practitioners. Mila's egg art is not just a decorative detail. It connects her to family, craft, and a specific kind of magic, giving the fantasy plot a human anchor. The story is interested in the value of knowledge passed from one generation to the next, even when some of that knowledge has been deliberately withheld.

This is a story about learning what has been kept from you.

The tone is more romantic and quest-driven than the Cat Adams Blood Singer books. There is danger and supernatural conflict, but readers also spend time with two people trying to understand one another while the rules of their world become clearer. The stakes grow from an injured stranger and a strange healing into a threat to magic on a much wider scale.

Start with Magic's Design. It introduces Mila, Talos, the magical setting, and the central conflict in one complete novel, so there is no earlier series installment needed before you begin.
