Author bio

Maggie McConnon is the pen name mystery writer Maggie Barbieri used for the Belfast McGrath books, a short run of cozy mysteries filled with weddings, food, family noise, and old secrets. Before Bel McGrath ever walked back into Shamrock Manor, Barbieri had already built a long working life in publishing and a solid career writing crime fiction under her own name.

She grew up in Brooklyn in a deeply Irish American family. She has recalled grandparents in both Brooklyn and the Bronx, aunts and uncles with brogues, and family gatherings full of singing, dancing, and stories about Ireland. She was also an Irish stepdancer, and she has said those family stories became part of the foundation for the Belfast McGrath novels.

That world stayed with her.

Barbieri came to fiction after years working as a freelance editor, especially on textbooks and academic publishing projects. Biographical notes place her first published mystery in her forties, which gives her writing story a nice second-act feel. She has also spoken about how Stephen King's On Writing helped her stop treating writing like a closed club and start treating it like a craft that gets better with practice.

Her earlier mystery work introduced Alison Bergeron in Murder 101, a series opener about a divorced English professor who keeps stumbling into trouble. Books like Extra Credit kept that mix of wit, crime, and everyday stress moving along. Readers who like her work often respond to the same things: capable women, dry humor, messy personal lives, and mysteries that grow out of work, family, and hometown history instead of feeling dropped in from nowhere.

Under the Maggie McConnon name, she shifted into a warmer, more openly comic register. Wedding Bel Blues introduces Bel McGrath, a chef whose glamorous New York life crashes hard, sending her back to Foster's Landing and her big Irish family. Bel of the Brawl and Bel, Book, and Scandal build on that setup with murder, romance, family tension, and the long shadow of a missing friend from Bel's teenage years.

She writes cozy mysteries that still feel a little rumpled and real.

A few things keep showing up across her books. New York settings matter, whether the backdrop is a campus, a suburb, or the Hudson Valley. So do strong family ties, old resentments, and secrets that refuse to stay buried. Even when the plots get twisty, the stories stay rooted in ordinary routines, teaching, editing, cooking, parenting, planning an event, getting through the day. That helps the humor land, and it makes the crime feel closer. Her father's time with the NYPD also fed background details in her earlier mysteries.

She has long been linked with the Hudson Valley, both as a home base and as a setting on the page. Recent publishing credits also show her still working as an editor alongside her fiction. That combination, day-job discipline on one side, storytelling on the other, goes a long way toward explaining why her novels feel busy, grounded, and easy to settle into.
