L.A. Connections

Series background & context

The Madison Castelli books follow a sharp, ambitious journalist who specialises in exposing the powerful, only to discover that her own family history may be the most explosive story of all. Madison is smart, beautiful and very good at getting people to talk, but she carries old wounds that drive her harder than she admits.

She first appears in the L.A. Connections novellas, where she reports on crime and corruption in Los Angeles. Those fast, interlocking stories set up her world: glossy magazines, high‑risk investigations and a city where everyone seems to be hiding something. Madison is drawn to power, but she is also genuinely angry about injustice, which makes her a dangerous mix of idealist and insider.

Later novels put her fully at centre stage. In Lethal Seduction Madison juggles an ex‑lover, a new relationship and an assignment that drags her into Las Vegas high life, all while she begins to suspect that her beloved father has darker ties than she ever imagined. In Deadly Embrace that suspicion deepens, sending her to Los Angeles to confront him just as he is accused of murder.

The series balances relationship drama with thriller beats. There are designer clothes, glamorous parties and passionate affairs, but there are also restaurant holdups, mob vendettas and people who will kill to keep the past buried. Collins plays out the tension between Madison's public image as a hard‑hitting reporter and her private fear that her family name might be tainted.

A recurring theme is control: who controls the story in the press, who controls the money in a mob family and whether Madison can control her own need to know the truth even when it might destroy her. Her work gives her access to presidents, billionaires and stars, yet it is the secrets inside her own childhood that haunt her hardest.

Readers who enjoy investigative heroines, tangled family loyalties and a mix of romance and danger will find the Madison Castelli books a punchier, more thriller‑leaning corner of Jackie Collins's larger universe.
