Author bio
Madeleine Roux was born in Minnesota and grew up in a creative family that seems to have left fingerprints all over her work. She has written about being the youngest of three children, with two older brothers, and about a childhood full of sports, games, pop culture, and imagination. That mix, playful on the surface and a little feral underneath, still shows up in her books.
She went to Beloit College in Wisconsin, where she studied creative writing and acting, graduating in 2008. Not long after, she completed an Honors Term project built around a full-length historical novel. That early stretch matters, because Roux did not arrive through a neat classroom-to-debut pipeline. She was trying forms, testing voice, and figuring out how to make a story feel immediate.
Then came zombies.
Her first big break grew out of the experimental fiction blog Allison Hewitt Is Trapped, which later became her first novel. That setup, a woman blogging her way through a zombie outbreak, already showed what Roux is especially good at: pressure, isolation, dread, and the small practical choices people make when the world goes bad. Sadie Walker Is Stranded followed in the same ruined world and pushed the outbreak farther outward.
A couple of years later, Asylum brought her to a much wider audience. The book drops teens into a summer program housed in a former asylum and mixes found photographs with a haunted, puzzle-box atmosphere. Readers who stick with Roux often come back for exactly that feeling, creepy places, damaged history, and characters who are never quite sure whether they are being hunted by ghosts, memory, or each other.
She kept moving.
The House of Furies books took that love of unsettling settings and shifted it into gothic fantasy, with Coldthistle House, devil's bargains, and a young heroine trying to survive among people and creatures far stranger than they first appear. In adult fiction, Roux has also written science fiction thrillers like Salvaged and Reclaimed, keeping her usual interest in fear and survival but trading haunted buildings for deep space and unstable identities. More recently, she has written historical romance too, including The Proposition and Much Ado About Margaret, which shows how willing she is to cross shelves without losing her taste for people under strain.
She has also become a reliable hand for tie-in worlds. Roux has written fiction connected to World of Warcraft, Critical Role, Dungeons & Dragons, Marvel, and Star Wars. That makes sense. Her books are often built around strong lore, high stakes, and characters carrying old wounds into dangerous places. Whether the setting is Azeroth, Exandria, or a made-up house full of monsters, she knows how to make a world feel busy, lived in, and a little unsafe.
One useful thing about reading across Roux's catalog is seeing how steady her interests are. She likes liminal spaces, institutions with rot under the paint, outsiders who are being underestimated, and people forced to decide what they are willing to become. Even when the tone changes, from YA horror to middle grade adventure to romance, there is usually some mix of wit, unease, and emotional bruising underneath.
These days she lives in Seattle, Washington, with her partner and dogs. She still feels like a writer who enjoys trying new doors, then seeing what kind of monster, mystery, or love story is waiting on the other side.
