Asylum Books in Order

The Asylum series is one of those YA horror shelves built around a setting you would be foolish to trust from the start. Dan Crawford arrives at a summer program at New Hampshire College Prep hoping for a reset, a chance to make friends and feel less like an outsider before college. The catch is that the dorm used to be part of Brookline, an old asylum for the criminally insane. That would already be enough to make most readers uneasy. Roux, quite sensibly, makes it worse.

Dan soon falls in with Abby and Jordan, and the series works because their friendship gives the horror something human to push against. Brookline is not just a creepy old building with tunnels and records and locked doors. It is a place with a history that still feels active, as if the institution never really shut down and only changed shape. Dan's growing connection to that past, especially to Warden Crawford, gives the books their recurring sense of dread.

The pictures do a lot of work.

One of the signature features here is the use of found photographs, which turn the books into a kind of hybrid between novel and curated nightmare file. The effect is not gimmicky so much as immersive. You are not only told that Brookline was wrong. You keep being shown unsettling fragments that make the wrongness feel physical.

The main trilogy widens the story without leaving the original rot behind. Sanctum sends Dan, Abby, and Jordan back toward the past through old carnival photos and another round of buried secrets. Catacomb moves into a road-trip shape and then drags the Brookline legacy all the way to New Orleans. Around those novels, Escape from Asylum works as a prequel centered on Ricky Desmond inside Brookline's earlier horrors, while The Scarlets, The Bone Artists, and The Warden widen the mythology through side characters and linked shadows.

That broader structure is part of the appeal. The series is not only about one haunting. It is about institutional cruelty echoing outward, catching different people in different decades, and leaving damage behind in new forms. Even when the books move locations, Brookline keeps staining the edges.

So what should you expect from an Asylum page? Expect creepy YA horror with strong atmosphere, hidden histories, and teens who keep finding that curiosity comes with a price. Expect ghosts, secrets, photographs, and more than one place you absolutely should not go after dark. Most of all, expect Brookline itself to feel like the real villain, because in a series like this, the building always remembers.
