Series background & context
The Mack's Bar Mystery series follows Mackenzie "Mack" Dalton, owner of a friendly Milwaukee neighborhood bar where regulars know one another's business almost as well as they know the drink menu. Mack has inherited the bar after her father's murder, so the place is both her livelihood and a reminder of a crime that has never fully left her alone.
Then a body turns up behind the bar in Murder on the Rocks, and Mack becomes part of the investigation. She is not a trained detective, but she lives with synesthesia, a neurological condition that causes sensory information to cross in unusual ways. Sounds, smells, colors, and emotions can register differently for her, making her quick to notice details that others miss. It is useful. It is also not always easy to explain to the police.
Mack's Bar is the heart of these books.
The bar brings together staff, loyal patrons, neighbors, suspects, and people who have known Mack and her family for years. That close-knit setting gives each case a personal feel. The problems do not arrive from nowhere. They often grow out of old grudges, secrets, local connections, or someone who has spent too much time in the same small circle.
Detective Duncan Albright becomes Mack's main link to official police work. Their relationship starts with caution on both sides, since Mack is figuring out when her unusual perceptions can help and when they might make her look suspicious. Across the series, murder cases lead to a suspicious death, a kidnapping, a cold case, anonymous threats, and crimes that push Mack closer to danger than she would like.
The mood is cozy in the sense that there is a familiar place to return to, plenty of conversation, and a cast of regulars worth checking in with. But the stakes are real. Mack has to keep the bar running while dealing with grief over her father, questions about whom she can trust, and the growing risk that somebody might decide she knows too much.
Start with Murder on the Rocks. It introduces the bar, Mack's synesthesia, her father's unresolved death, and Duncan's first reason to take Mack seriously. Reading in order works best because the cases stand on their own while Mack's relationships and confidence build from book to book.
