The work begins as research and quickly turns personal, especially as she becomes more drawn to the clan’s violent past. Before the Fire flips the setup in a very Jaid Black way. Dr. Kane Edmonds lives on a dying twenty-fifth-century Earth and needs a long-extinct plant from the past if she has any hope of stopping a lethal brain virus.

That means the series works from both directions at once. One book looks backward through ruins, relics, and buried stories. The other comes at the same broad world from the future, where science and survival force the heroine into Scotland’s past. The MacGregors themselves become the connective tissue, a clan line that makes the historical setting feel alive rather than decorative.

The atmosphere is adventurous more than cozy.

You get castles, hidden chambers, research quests, time-crossed desire, and the sense that history is not done causing trouble yet. These books are not really about courtly Highland nostalgia. They are about collision, past with future, science with legend, modern women with men shaped by much older rules. That is a very Jaid Black kind of playground, and the series feels stronger once you know that going in.
