Series background & context

The Mac Reilly books are glossy romantic mysteries built around a private investigator who knows his way around celebrity mansions, beach towns, and people who lie beautifully. Mac Reilly works in Malibu, where the weather is lovely, the houses are absurd, and trouble has a way of arriving at the front door in excellent clothes. The series opens with One of Those Malibu Nights, and that first book sets the tone quickly: a scream in the night, a missing woman, and a case that refuses to stay small.

Mac is easygoing on the surface, but he is not careless. He notices things, asks the right questions, and keeps moving when a case gets bigger than expected. Just as important is Sunny Alvarez, his smart, capable, sometimes exasperated partner in sleuthing and romance. Their on-again, off-again relationship gives the series its emotional thread. Some books lean more toward Mac, others give Sunny more room, but the push and pull between them is part of the fun.

The sun is bright, but the stakes are real.

Across the quartet, Adler shifts the action from Southern California to the French Riviera, Monte Carlo, and Barcelona. There's Something about St. Tropez turns a luxury getaway into a knot of scams, stolen art, murder, and ghostly unease. It All Began in Monte Carlo puts Sunny in the middle of jewel robberies, blackmail, and a dangerous crowd. From Barcelona, with Love follows an old Hollywood murder scandal into Spain, where Mac and Sunny have to work through layers of glamour, reinvention, and suspicion.

What links these books is not a single long conspiracy, but a shared mood. They are mysteries with romance, travel, and a lot of scene-setting. Adler likes beautiful hotels, yachts, villas, and seaside streets, but she uses that luxury as a backdrop for bad decisions, family secrets, and people hiding more than one identity. These are not hard-edged police procedurals. They are breezier, more playful, and more interested in chemistry and atmosphere than forensic detail.

That makes the series easy to dip into, even if you are not a strict start-at-book-one reader. Each novel brings its own case to solve, while Mac and Sunny's relationship quietly develops in the background. If you want a mystery series with sunshine, expensive problems, flirtation, and a steady sense that paradise is never quite as safe as it looks, Mac Reilly is a very good place to begin.
