Author bio

Lysa TerKeurst is an American author, speaker, and Bible teacher best known as president and chief visionary officer of Proverbs 31 Ministries, a nonprofit that shares daily devotions, podcasts, and events with women around the world. She has written more than two dozen books of Christian non-fiction, many of them New York Times bestsellers about faith in everyday life.

She was born in Tallahassee, Florida, in 1969 and grew up in the South. Her parents divorced when she was in middle school, and the death of her younger sister when Lysa was a teenager left her questioning God and walking away from church for a season.

She later attended Furman University in South Carolina, where faith slowly became personal again rather than just familiar background.

In the mid-1990s, a small newsletter for women called Proverbs 31 crossed her path. Lysa joined the team, eventually helping to grow it into Proverbs 31 Ministries, which now reaches millions of women each day through online devotions, podcast episodes, social media, and events. She serves as president and chief visionary officer and is closely involved with the ministry’s She Speaks Conference and COMPEL writer training program, both created to equip women who feel called to speak or write.

Lysa published her first book in 2000 and has been writing steadily ever since. Readers often discover her through books like Uninvited, which tackles the sting of rejection; It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way, which wrestles honestly with disappointment; The Best Yes, about making wiser decisions and escaping people-pleasing; Forgiving What You Can’t Forget, a guide to working through deep hurt; and Good Boundaries and Goodbyes, which offers practical language for setting limits in difficult relationships.

Alongside those books she has written several devotionals meant to give readers a few focused minutes with Scripture each day. Embraced gathers 100 short readings about being held by God in ordinary and painful moments and received a major Christian book-of-the-year award in 2019. Other titles like Seeing Beautiful Again and You’re Going to Make It help readers process grief, anxiety, and raw emotions at a gentle, sustainable pace.

Her family story has shaped her work as much as any conference stage.

Lysa and her husband Art raised three daughters in North Carolina and later adopted two teenage boys from Liberia after meeting them through a visiting boys’ choir, eventually helping inspire dozens of other adoptions from the same orphanage. Today she calls the Charlotte area home and often writes from the same well-used farm table she mentions in her books.

In recent years she has also written from places of deep personal pain. After nearly three decades of marriage marked by repeated betrayal, she announced in 2022 that she was pursuing a divorce and began exploring disappointment, forgiveness, boundaries, and trust in a more raw, personal way. Her honesty helps readers name what is destructive, seek wise counsel, and still look for God’s presence in the middle of heartbreak.

In 2024 she shared that she had remarried and is now building a new life with her husband Chaz Adams while continuing to write, record the Therapy & Theology podcast with her counselor and theology team, and teach at events across North America.

Through all of this, Lysa’s writing voice has stayed consistent—story-driven, honest about her own missteps, and focused on small, doable next steps rather than quick fixes. She writes for women trying to keep showing up for their families, their faith, and their own hearts even when life looks nothing like they expected.
