Author bio
Mary Wine writes romance with one foot in history and the other in adventure. Her books move from medieval Scotland to Tudor England, and sometimes into psychic suspense, futuristic romance, and steampunk. Across all of it, she tends to like capable women, stubborn men, and stories where duty makes life harder before love makes it better.
Before her Highland books found a wide audience, Wine was already writing across genres. Early titles like Dream Shadow and Alcandian Quest show her interest in paranormal and futuristic romance. In interviews, she has said that historical romance was not selling well in ebook form when she first started publishing, so she wrote where the market was open and kept going.
Then history pulled harder.
Wine has long described herself as a history buff, a historical costumer, and a reenactor. She sews her own garments, from corsets and petticoats to clothing inspired by the court of Elizabeth I, and that hands-on interest shows up in the texture of her novels. Castles feel lived in. Clothing matters. So do rank, custom, and the practical work of daily life.
That practical streak may be one reason her romances feel grounded. Even in books with big emotions, there is usually a real problem to solve: a clan feud, a forced marriage, a political trap, a ruined keep, or a woman trying to hold on to her freedom. In the Highland novels, especially In Bed with a Stranger, To Conquer a Highlander, The Highlander's Prize, and Highland Spitfire, she returns again and again to loyalty, survival, and the rough bargain between desire and duty.
She also likes a heroine who pushes back.
Readers who stay with Wine's catalog get a good sense of her range. The McJames, Sutherlands, Highlander, Highland Weddings, and Highland Rogues books lean into Scottish clan politics and heated courtship. The Tudor books shift the action toward England and royal pressure. A Lady Can Never Be Too Curious and A Captain and a Corset let her play with steampunk machinery and secret societies, while the Dream books keep one foot in psychic suspense.
In 2008, she won an EPPIE Award in erotic western romance, a reminder that her career has never fit into one neat box. She has also built a loyal readership by moving comfortably between sensual romance, historical adventure, and stories with a speculative twist.
Off the page, Wine has shared that she lives in California with her husband and two sons. She has also written about another side of her life that fits her fiction better than you might expect: martial arts. She earned a second-degree black belt, and that discipline, patience, and respect for physical training seem to match the way her characters carry themselves, especially the ones who know that strength is as much mental as it is physical.
If you're new to her, the Highland romances are the easiest way in. If you've only read the Highland romances, the earlier paranormal and futuristic books show a different side of her imagination. Either way, Mary Wine tends to deliver the same promise: strong attraction, a lot of pressure, and people who have to choose love while the world keeps giving them reasons not to.
