Blood Money

by Matt Rogers

2019

Ruby Nazarian is a twenty year old product of the Lynx program, an all female covert initiative that weaponises seduction. In Monaco she infiltrates a billionaire’s superyacht to stop him laundering blood soaked cash, then discovers just how dangerous her cover really is.

Series background & context

Lynx Shorts opens a new window into Matt Rogers’s universe by shifting the spotlight to a very different kind of operative. Instead of hulking black ops soldiers, the focus here is on the Lynx program, an all female clandestine initiative built on a ruthless idea: nothing disarms like a charming face.

From childhood, girls from hard backgrounds are recruited, trained and reshaped into highly competent human weapons. By the time they reach their twenties they can move through high society as easily as they can fight in tight spaces. Their job is to get close to men who think they are untouchable and make sure justice finds them, one way or another.

Blood Money introduces Ruby Nazarian, a twenty year old Lynx asset working in that uncomfortable grey zone between service and exploitation. She is sent to Monaco to infiltrate the inner circle of Aaron Wayne, a real estate magnate circling a deal soaked in dirty cash. On the surface she is just another glamorous presence on his superyacht. Underneath she is counting exits, mapping loyalties and waiting for the right moment to strike.

Nothing goes smoothly. The people around Wayne are jumpy, and suspicion follows Ruby from one deck to another. The confined setting of the yacht turns the mission into a pressure cooker. Rogers uses the close quarters to highlight how little room for error there is when seduction and subterfuge are the main tools in play.

Lynx Shorts sits alongside the Will Slater and King & Slater books rather than underneath them. It shares their appetite for action and their interest in shadowy programs, but it looks at those structures from a different angle. Ruby’s world is one where image is as much a weapon as a rifle, and where the line between empowerment and abuse is never as clean as the agency claims.

Readers who enjoy morally knotty espionage, luxury settings hiding rotten deals and a capable heroine walking into rooms everyone else underestimates will find a lot to like here. The shorts also hint at how the Lynx program might collide with the wider cast in the future.
